Movie Week: 10/3/09 to 10/10/09

By: Gavin Mooney

Today I just realized that one year ago this week was my first article reviewing movies here at RwN. Funny enough the dates for this movie week haven’t changed except the year. So....... Yea for me! One year anniversary! I only have a couple movies to add to the movie list week, all of which are already out and may have already been viewed by you, our loyal readers. Enjoy.

The Invention of Lying - Ricky Gervais delivers again with this funny heartfelt story. This movie takes place in a world where humans never evolved or learned to lie. It is simply in their nature and they are compelled to tell the truth, so much so that there isn’t even a word for lying. Then one day our protagonist, played by Gervais, tells or rather events a lie. The fun just picks up from here. I can think of a ton of jokes involving a man who can lie in a world full of truth tellers. The acting by all the cast was really good. Jennifer Garner, whom I do not like, was really good in this movie along with all her co-stars. This movie was funny and has a lot to offer. There are jokes, a heartfelt love story, and an interesting look at a man torn between what he wants and can have through lying and his desire to still be a good person. Now when I say funny it is not laugh out loud, knee jerking funny, but rather subtle, underhanded, clever funny in true British fashion. British humor isn’t exactly for everyone but I’m sure you know who you are. This would actually make for a good date movie with that special someone. So if you want to laugh or are in need of a movie to take someone on a date to, check out this one. It won’t disappoint.

3 out 5 laughs

Pandorum - New sci-fi horror movie out starring Dennis Quaid and Ben Foster (Mazursky in Alpha Dog). It begins with Mazursky awaking from hypersleep not knowing who he is or what his mission is on board a ship which appears to be in bad shape. He goes on to wake Quaid in order to help them remember what there mission is and to figure out what is wrong with the ship, all the while fighting what they think are the beginning symptoms of pandorum, a psychological condition brought on by deep space travel. This is pretty much all I knew going into this movie and personally I think it’s all you need to know. First off, this was supposed to be a horror film which in part made me almost not go see it at all but my fandom of Mazursky won out in the end and I did. On the horror aspect they did not deliver at all so if that attracted you to this movie be prepared to be disappointed. Second, I went into this movie with low standards and I was pleasantly surprised. I thought this movie was great. It was engaging, the characters believable and easy to empathize with. I thought the story was cool and interesting with a cool twist at the end. Now to warn you, the critics out there have been bashing this movie saying it blows. If I totally didn’t get this movie and dig the story and the unique idea I might agree with them, but I thought this movie cool and suspenseful in an Aliens sort of way. Talk about a movie that actually blows. Now for all you Aliens fans out there I apologize but that movie was slow and boring, unlike this movie. At least according to me; others would in fact flip my opinion and their opinions on the two movies. This movie isn’t for everyone, in fact if you’re not a sci-fi fan I wouldn’t waste my time. The sci-fi aspect of this story is the most interesting part. Honestly I thought it gives the entire bang for your buck you could ask. So whether in theatres or out on rent go see this movie.

4 out 5 crazy hypersleepers approve of this movie.

Out For Rent or on HBO....

Bedtime Stories - Now out for rent or to buy on DVD is a funny, clever little movie about every child’s favorite activity of the night, story time. This movie is about a janitor, played by Adam Sandler, who has to watch his niece and nephew for a week and so to entertain them at night he tells them bedtime stories. The next day he finds out the story came true and then plans to tell a series of stories to make his life better. The only catch is the kids’ additions to the stories make the stories and Sandlers life a bit more than he bargained for. Adam Sandler was great in this movie. Honestly the only reason I watched it was because of him and he did not disappoint, as could be expected. Sandler was wonderful on screen and did a fine job acting opposite the children and all his co-stars in the film. Now I don’t usually watch Disney films, what with Disney being the devil and all, but this was really well done and clever. This movie would especially be a good fun for the whole family movie. So if you and the fam are looking for a good movie this winter to cuddle up and watch check out this one. It won’t disappoint.

3 1/2 out 5 fairytale creatures approve.
